[ Resin Coalescers ]

Oleophilic resin coalescers are used for the removal of free oil from aqueous streams. 

Unidro has a decades-long experience in supplying resin coalescers, and has developed a unique design based on the use of two different kind of oleophilic media (“dual step” coalescer).

The most common application of this technology is the treatment of the potentially contaminated condensates in oil refineries.

Many among the most famous international Oil Companies have successfully installed Unidro coalescers, all around the world.

A Self-regenerating Process

In the resin coalescer, feed water upflows through a sandwich-packed layer of oleophilic resin. Due to the oleophilic properties of the filling media, dispersed oil droplets tend to adhere to the resin beads, thus forming an oily film all around the bead. Once the film grows, it is released by the resin and dragged by the water flow through a second oleophilic media section, where the oil droplets do aggregate to form even larger drops.

Application and Performances

Deoiling of contaminated condensate is the typical application of the resin coalescer, which is normally part of a complete treatment unit that includes a pre-filter (installed upstream the coalescer) and an activated carbon filter (installed downstream the coalescer). 

Starting from an oil content of several tens of milligrams per liter (up to 100), a typical coalescer performance would reduce the oil concentration down to around 1 ppm. The downstream carbon filter provides final polishing to the condensate, bringing the residual oil content to ppb values. The key added-value of installing the coalescer is the large extension of AC media life before exhaustion, which is proportional to the oil content reduction.

As the coalescer is sensitive to the presence of solids, an upstream pre-filter is normally installed, to protect the oleophilic resin from rust particles that are likely to be present in the condensate.

Call-off Agreements: as easy as a phone call

The management of a complete SPIR form covering all itemized components of a package as well as the supply of consumables can be very easy and convenient within the frame of a Call Off agreement.

Unit prices agreed with multi-years validity, commercial terms and conditions fixed in the agreement and applicable to any individual delivery allows easy and trouble free orders from end users and prompt delivery of each piece when needed.

Filter elements

For filter elements, disposable cartridges and other consumables, thanks to in-house fabrication of some items elements and optimized design features of all our filters, we can implement an effective stock scheme either at Unidro home warehouse or at customer premises to grant immediate availability when needed. 

In some selected locations, Unidro service and material storage may also be available close to site.

Training programs: custom tailored as everything we do 

Our training programs are designed to match the specific clients’ needs and requirements. 

Training to operators, automation and control, maintenance teams, chemical lab staff, process engineers: a specific program is planned for any specialist in order to create the skills required for a safe, reliable and trouble free execution of ordinary and extraordinary operations.

A complete education package

All our programs include troubleshooting tips, safety instructions and a number of practical recommendations. Each session may include room classes as well as site activity. 

The support of slides and other educational, the distribution of technical material to the attendees, the check of the results via multiple choice questions at the end of each session are also part of each training package. The lessons may be included as part of periodical (annual) refresher training programs already existing in client organization. 

Training schemes

Our basic training schemes includes:

START Initial training sessions for operators, which may be arranged before, during or after unit initial commissioning

REFRESH Periodical refresh sessions to operators and to introduce new staff to the most critical issues relevant to the package

L/L Lessons-learned advanced sessions, to take advantage of experience made on other similar units where Unidro is involved in

We assign a process engineer with the required skills to each program. We discuss and agree with the customer the details of the syllabus in advance, in order to fit perfectly with every individual case.

[ Contisand, Unidro Continuous Sand Filter ]

CONTISAND is a continuously operating sand filter with no need to stop the operation for backwashing or cleaning.

The principle of operation

Incoming water is distributed at the bottom of the filter and, flowing upward through the sand, reaches the filtered water outlet at the filter top side. Simultaneously with the filtration process, the sand is moving downwards, lifted by an airlift to the filter top where fouled sand is cleaned in a sand washer and the suspended solids are discharged with the wash water. Cleaned sand is then falling onto the filtering sand layer.

The advantages

CONTISAND does not require the usual backwash facilities (as pumps, sequencing ON/OFF valves, water hold-up tanks) nor PLC/DCS inputs as their operation is continuous and self-adjusting. They only need pressurized air or gas, either PA provided by utility system or generated by a dedicated small compressor.

  • No need for the filters to be put off service during backwash. Filtration and backwash occur simultaneously
  • The quality of filtrate is constant during the cycle
  • No need for storage of backwash water
  • No need for backwash pumps and blowers
  • No need of automatic sequencing valves and PLC to handle operation and backwash cycles

The production of Unidro CONTISAND is standardized. Modular diameters are available and, for each diameter, different layer depth may be selected. Several materials for wetted parts are available (such as CS, SS, FRP and others). Fresh water, seawater, produced water, even saturated brine may be treated without any corrosion problem.
